La Universidad de Puerto Rico no es solamente el principal centro de educación superior del país, sino también donde se realiza el 95% de las investigaciones científicas en la isla. En sus once recintos en todo Puerto Rico se gestan las nuevas generaciones. La universidad pública es para una sociedad el principal vehículo de superación y la oportunidad de progreso para los necesitados y marginados.

Desde su fundación en 1903, la UPR ha jugado un papel protagónico en el desarrollo social y económico de Puerto Rico. Con más de 60,000 estudiantes y un número superior a 5,000 docentes e investigadores, la UPR constituye el principal centro de inteligencia y gestor del nuevo talento del país.

La UPR ha albergado a prominentes investigadores en las ciencias e ingeniería y a tres profesores galardonados con el Premio Nobel de Literatura. Su prestigio trasciende nuestras fronteras nacionales. Sus graduados han puesto en alto el nombre de Puerto Rico en prácticamente todos los campos. El hecho de que el principal proyecto de la NASA, el de la exploración del planeta Marte, sea dirigido por un puertorriqueño graduado del Recinto de Mayagüez es evidencia del nivel de excelencia de los egresados de la UPR.

Si bien es cierto que vivimos una crisis económica, no es creíble el planteamiento de escasez de fondos en un país que despilfarra millones de dólares en asesores inservibles, campañas publicitarias inútiles, legisladores infructuosos y expansiones innecesarias en el Tribunal Supremo y la Junta de Síndicos de la UPR. El problema no es la escasez de fondos, sino las prioridades del uso de los fondos disponibles.

La crisis de la UPR es mucho más profunda que los $800 de la cuota adicional. Se reduce la oferta académica, se rebajan los sueldos de los profesores, se dejan escasear los materiales educativos, se eliminan seminarios, sabáticas y programas de mejoramiento para los profesores, se desatiende el deterioro de la planta física.

Igualmente se desmanteló la prestigiosa editorial de la UPR, carta de presentación de la institución y el principal recurso para diseminar la producción intelectual del país.

La visión de la UPR de quienes fuimos educados en este centro universitario es dramáticamente distinta a la del Gobernador y los síndicos ajenos y extraños a la institución.

Una administración universitaria prepotente, arrogante y aislada no puede establecer diálogo con los jóvenes llenos de ilusiones, inquietudes y esperanzas en los inicios de su vida adulta. Una administración insensible que alberga policías, mercenarios y fuerza de choque adopta actitudes típicas del liderato de un país totalitario donde impera la intolerancia y el abuso. En tiempos de crisis, los países exitosos invierten en sus universidades. Este año Singapur, catorce veces más pequeño que nosotros, abrió su cuarta universidad pública dedicada a la tecnología y diseño en colaboración con la MIT.

El banquero español, Emilio Botín, pronunció al comienzo de la crisis mundial: “La inversión en educación constituye la apuesta más eficaz a medio plazo para avanzar hacia sociedades abiertas, socialmente más equilibradas y económicamente más dinámicas. En momentos económicos tan complejos como los que atravesamos, es cuando hay que decir con claridad que la sociedad no podrá hacer frente a los retos que nos plantea la creciente globalización de la sociedad del conocimiento si no contamos con un mayor protagonismo de la universidad y sus investigadores. La educación superior es una de las principales inversiones de futuro en cualquier país”.

Estos comentarios contrastan con la visión miope y retrógrada del actual gobierno, que entiende que la UPR es un gasto y no una inversión. Este gobierno coloca la centenaria institución educativa en manos de personas insensibles e incapaces de administrar, comunicar e inspirar al principal talento del país y a nuestras futuras generaciones.

Puerto Rico necesita una ley universitaria que la despolitice y, como en las mejores universidades públicas del mundo, sea la comunidad universitaria su administradora.

"The U.S. is supposed to be a fair mediator and a real sponsor of a successful peace process with specific targets," Majdalani said. "Instead of blaming the Israeli government, which obstructed the peace process, the U.S. is blaming other world countries that did its political duties and recognized the state."
Majdalani was referring to the recent declaration of Latin America countries, Brazil and Argentina, of recognizing the establishment of an independent Palestinian state. The Palestinians had threatened that if the peace talks fail, they would urge the world to recognize an independent state.

Unwilling to let the Democrats adopt Nixon's anti-democratic, press-hating legacy as their own, Republican Congressman Peter King asserted that the publication of classified diplomatic cables is "worse even than a physical attack on Americans" and that Wikileaks should be officially designed as a terrorist organization. Mike Huckabee followed such blather to its logical conclusion by suggesting that Bradley Manning should be executed.
But the truly scandalous and shocking response to the Wikileaks documents has been that of other journalists, who make the Obama Administration sound like the ACLU. In a recent article in The New Yorker, the Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Steve Coll sniffed that "the archives that WikiLeaks has published are much less significant than the Pentagon Papers were in their day" while depicting Assange as a "self-aggrandizing control-freak" whose website "lacks an ethical culture that is consonant with the ideals of free media." Channeling Richard Nixon, Coll labeled Wikileaks' activities - formerly known as journalism - by his newly preferred terms of "vandalism" and "First Amendment-inspired subversion."

The much expected announcement that after a thorough review they have determined the paperwork is in order is a last-ditch desperate effort to block inquiries into the mortgage creation process and the sale of “mortgage bonds” to investors. They attempted to emulate the government’s PR stunt last year with the “stress test” forgetting that they are private companies in litigation subject to discovery. They have now opened the door to discovery, which is the last thing they wanted. Litigants can now question who was involved in this “review”, what they did, from they received information and assurances, and what documents they looked at. They can ask what was the basis upon which they concluded that they could proceed with foreclosures?
The documents were not sloppy and they were not processed sloppily. They were created and treated exactly as planned. They did it because they thought they could get away with it. They had enough money to buy off any legislator or Judge, or so they thought. But it isn’t working out that way. It’s not the first time these mega-banks have stepped on a land mine and it won’t be the last, as long as we allow them to grow into such behemoths such that that ascribe to themselves the qualities of government or God.

The United States announced plans to sell the Arab kingdom up to USD 60 billion worth of arms, AFP quoted Andrew Shapiro, assistant secretary of defense for political-military affairs, as saying on Wednesday.
The package is to be delivered over 15 to 20 years and includes 84 F-15 jets, 70 Apache gunships, 72 Blackhawk helicopters, 36 light helicopters and thousands of laser-guided smart bombs.
The enormous package is said by the Pentagon to give Riyadh “a whole host of defensive” and “deterrence capabilities.” The US Defense Department has also made clear that the deal will not affect “Israel’s military upper-hand in the region.”
Tel Aviv and its sympathizers in Washington had earlier voiced concern on US arms sales to Saudi Arabia.
“Our assessment is that this (sale) would not diminish Israel’s qualitative military edge, and therefore we felt comfortable in going forward with the sale,” Shapiro said.
Alexander Vershbow, the US assistant secretary of defense for international security affairs, said Washington consulted Israel as the deal took shape.
The US government always consults the Israeli regime on any arms sales to Arab countries as a matter of policy intended to ensure that Israel maintains a military superiority in the Middle East region.
“There have been high-level discussions, as well as working-level discussions. And I think it’s fair to say that, based on what we’ve heard at the high levels, Israel does not object to this sale,” he said.
US President Barack Obama’s administration has reportedly notified Congress of its plans to make the deal and the Capitol now has the authority to amend or delay the agreement.

En diciembre de 1947 la paz conformista de la Universidad de Puerto Rico fue interrumpida por un grupo de atrevidos jóvenes que tuvieron la osadía de invitar a Don Pedro Albizu Campos a dar una charla en el campus. Albizu, quien estaba por regresar a Puerto Rico tras una larga condena carcelaria en Estados Unidos, era visto como el mismísimo diablo por la administración universitaria. El entonces rector Jaime Benítez estaba empeñado en hacer de la UPR una 'casa de estudios' apolítica que sirviera de fábrica de tecnócratas eficientes y fieles peones para la colonia. Dijo Benítez que Albizu predicaba una doctrina terrorista que no tenía lugar en la tribuna universitaria.

Los jóvenes independentistas fueron de todos modos a darle la bienvenida al patriota. Pero antes de partir del recinto universitario, izaron la bandera puertorriqueña, la cual estaba prácticamente proscrita, en el asta y cantaron La Borinqueña. En esos años, ambos actos eran más que suficiente para entrar en la lista de 'subversivos terroristas' del gobierno colonial. Por su insolencia contra las autoridades coloniales, los estudiantes fueron expulsados. Fue este acto de represión lo que causó la huelga estudiantil de 1948.

En sus memorias universitarias, Benítez describe a uno de los estudiantes expulsados con particular vehemencia, como quien describe a su archi-enemigo. Ese joven revoltoso, ese peligroso revolucionario mayagüezano que casi le daña la 'casa de estudios' con su herejía nacionalista. Su nombre: Juan Mari Brás.

Para entonces, Mari Brás no era nuevo en el mundo de la política. En 1943, teniendo apenas quince años de edad, fundó el Capítulo de Agregados Pro Independencia (CAPI) junto con varios compañeros de escuela superior de Mayagüez. En ese mismo año fundó y dirigió el programa radial 'Gritos de la Patria', la primera revista radial independentista. En 1944 presidió la Juventud Independentista Puertorriqueña, organización que combinó varias organizaciones estudiantiles de la época. En ese mismo año se matriculó en el recinto de Río Piedras de la UPR, e inmediatamente se hizo miembro de la Sociedad Independentista Universitaria (SIU).

Como estudiante de la UPR, Mari Brás se destacó como escritor y activista estudiantil. De 1945 a 1946 fue jefe de redacción del periódico universitario La Torre. En esos mismos años presidió la SIU y escribió varios artículos para El Imparcial, el semanario Puerto Rico Ilustrado y El Universitario. En 1946 fue uno de los fundadores del Partido Independentista Puertorriqueño.

Durante la huelga universitaria de 1948 Mari Brás tuvo que hacerle frente a la represión constantemente. Fue arrestado y encarcelado un sinnúmero de veces por sus actividades subversivas. En un día fue arrestado, apresado y liberado tres veces. A pesar de la persecución, sacó el tiempo y las energías para dirigir la campaña de su padre, Santiago Mari Ramos, para alcalde por el PIP, y dirigir con Yeyo Rodríguez el radioperiódico del partido en el oeste de la Isla.

En 1949 logró ser admitido al Florida Southern College mediante la intervención de un amigo del entonces presidente de Guatemala Juan José Arévalo. Es ahí donde logra acabar su bachillerato. En el verano de 1950 cumplió una condena de cárcel por sus 'crímenes políticos' cometidos en la huelga de la UPR. De 1951 a 1954 vivió en Washington DC cursando estudios de ciencias políticas y derecho, primero en George Washington University hasta que un operativo McCarthyista del FBI causa que lo expulsen. Después continúa su grado en American University. Durante este período trabajó en la Brookings Institution como asistente de investigación.

En 1956, tras haber hecho práctica privada en abogacía en Puerto Rico por dos años, hizo campaña para representante por acumulación del PIP. Al año siguiente Gilberto Concepción de Gracia le dió trabajo como asesor del partido en el senado. En esta época también dió apoyo a las luchas populares contra las dictaduras de Trujillo en la República Dominicana y Fulgencio Batista en Cuba.

En 1959 fue uno de los fundadores del Movimiento Pro Independencia (MPI) y, junto con César Andreu Iglesias, le dió comienzo a CLARIDAD, periódico que dirigió en varios períodos en las siguientes tres décadas.

El MPI en 1971 se transformó en el Partido Socialista Puertorriqueño, el cual Mari Brás dirigió hasta octubre de 1982. En 1973 habló en la ONU, siendo así el primer boricua independentista en comparecer ante dicha institución.

En marzo de 1976, mientras hacía campaña como candidato a la gobernación por el PSP, uno de sus hijos, Santiago Mari Pesquera, fue brutalmente asesinado. Hasta hoy día, este crimen ha permanecido impune y sin resolver.

En su afán de lograr la unidad entre los diferentes sectores del movimiento independentista, Mari Brás fundó en 1989 la organización Causa Común Independentista. En enero de 1993 convocó un Encuentro Hostosiano por la Independencia de Puerto Rico con el propósito de lograr un verdadero diálogo solidario entre independentistas de diferentes afiliaciones y no afiliados. De esta gestión surge al año siguiente el Congreso Nacional Hostosiano, el cual hoy co-presiden Noel Colón Martínez, Alejandro Torres y Héctor Pesquera.

El once de julio de 1994 Mari Brás renunció formalmente a su ciudadanía estadounidense en la embajada de Estados Unidos en Caracas, desatando así un enérgico debate en Puerto Rico sobre el tema de la ciudadanía. La líder anexionista Miriam Ramírez de Ferrer recurrió a los tribunales para quitarle el derecho a votar, pero se vió frustrada en su intención cuando el juez superior Angel Hermida decidió el 21 de octubre de 1996 que es inconstitucional el requerir la ciudadanía americana para votar en Puerto Rico. Ramírez de Ferrer apeló al Tribunal Supremo, el cual falló el pasado 18 de noviembre en favor de Mari Brás. El significado de esta decisión está siendo debatido apasionadamente por todos los sectores políticos de Puerto Rico, y seguramente será motivo de acalorada controversia por varios años más.

Israeli defense minister Ehud Barak approved an order for 20 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters in a deal valued at around $2.75 billion, according to Haaretz. The Israeli Air Force expects to take delivery of the first aircraft in 2015. The article quotes Barak saying the F-35 costs $96 million a copy. The entire deal will be funded by American military aid.
The F-35 deal had dragged for more than two years as the IAF wanted access to the plane’s hardware and software; they also wanted to install Israeli electronic warfare and configure it to carry Israeli-made missiles. The JSF program folks said no, that the deal was a “closed package.”
Although, if the Israelis place a larger order down the road, the JSF program said more Israeli-sourced components could be installed. To sweeten terms of the deal, Lockheed Martin agreed to buy more component parts for the JSF from Israeli firms; at a price of around $4 billion.
So, the IAF gets a squadron of F-35s, Israeli industry gets more orders for JSF components, and its all paid for by American taxpayers; certainly a win-win for the Israelis.

Despite their considerable differences, neighboring states such as India, Pakistan, China, Iran and Saudi Arabia share a common interest in preventing Afghanistan from being dominated by any single power or being a permanently failed state that exports instability to others.

AL-ARAKIB, ISRAEL -- On July 26, Israeli police demolished 45 buildings in the unrecognized Bedouin village of al-Arakib, razing the entire village to the ground to make way for a Jewish National Fund forest.
The destruction was part of a larger project to force the Bedouin community of the Negev away from their ancestral lands and into seven Indian reservation-style communities the Israeli government has constructed for them. The land will then be open for Jewish settlers, including young couples in the army and those who may someday be evacuated from the West Bank after a peace treaty is signed. For now, the Israeli government intends to uproot as many villages as possible and erase them from the map by establishing "facts on the ground" in the form of JNF forests. One of the most troubling aspects of the destruction of al-Arakib was a report by CNN that the hundreds of Israeli riot police who stormed the village were accompanied by "busloads of cheering civilians." Who were these civilians and why didn't CNN or any outlet investigate further?
I traveled to al-Arakib yesterday with a delegation from Ta'ayush, an Israeli group that promotes a joint Arab-Jewish struggle against the occupation. The activists spent the day preparing games and activities for the village's traumatized children, helping the villagers replace their uprooted olive groves, and assisting in the reconstruction of their demolished homes. In a massive makeshift tent where many of al-Arakib's residents now sleep, I interviewed village leaders about the identity of the cheering civilians. Each one confirmed the presence of the civilians, describing how they celebrated the demolitions. As I compiled details, the story grew increasingly horrific.
After interviewing more than a half dozen elders of the village, I was able to finally identify the civilians in question. What I discovered was more disturbing than I had imagined.

On Thursday, after a slew of discouraging data suggested that "uncertain" might not be the most accurate description of what we know about where the economy is headed, stock prices surged.
Go figure. Jobless claims, which last week fell to their lowest point in two years, jumped back up today to where they have more or less been for the last couple of months. Existing home sales fell for the second straight month, while inventories of unsold homes surged. The index of leading economic indicators compiled by the Conference Board fell for the second time in three months.
